About Dr. Sanjay Rai:
Dr. Sanjay Rai serves as the Acting Secretary for the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) and is the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Montgomery College. With over 30 years of dedicated experience in higher education, Dr. Rai’s journey is marked by remarkable achievements and an unwavering commitment to breaking down barriers to educational access.
A Champion of Student Success: Dr. Rai has tirelessly advocated student success throughout his career. He has spearheaded transformative initiatives to bolster student achievement in academic, career, technical, and workforce development programs. Notably, his innovative approach has led to the redesign of developmental education, the revision of alternate placement policies, and the embedding of coaches in classrooms to enhance student success.
Innovator and Collaborator: Dr. Rai’s impact extends far beyond the classroom. He played a pivotal role in creating programs tailored to the needs of emerging industries such as cloud computing, cybersecurity, cell and gene therapy, and data science. His collaborative spirit has fostered valuable partnerships with the community, industry, and government, enriching academic programs and benefiting thousands of students.
A Unique Perspective: As a product of the community college system, Dr. Rai brings a unique and invaluable perspective to post-secondary education. His dedication to aligning academic and workforce needs has driven his efforts to create an inclusive higher education ecosystem that offers meaningful and affordable access to education and workforce training for all Maryland residents.
Recognition and Contribution: Dr. Rai holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Arkansas and has authored numerous scholarly articles and academic publications, actively contributing to the field of mathematics. His leadership at Montgomery College has been transformative, with initiatives like the Institute for Part-time Faculty Engagement and Support and the Workforce Development and Continuing Education unit benefiting students, employers, and the community.
